Booster box vs Collector Booster box

The two boxes on every Magic release answer different questions. The short version: buy a Play Booster box to draft, build decks and open the set at the lowest cost per pack; buy a Collector Booster box when what you want is the foil, extended-art and serialized versions of the cards.

Play Booster box (Magic)

• 30 Play Boosters of 14 cards (plus a token or art card) for every set since Tarkir: Dragonstorm in spring 2025; the first Play Booster sets, Murders at Karlov Manor to Aetherdrift, had 36. Older sets: Draft Boosters at 36 x 15 or Set Boosters at 30 x 12. The product page shows the count for each box.
• Every Play Booster has at least one rare or mythic, one traditional foil and one wildcard slot of any rarity; special treatments (borderless, showcase) appear at a low rate. The product page lists the published composition for each set.
• Best for: playgroups that draft (30 packs = 10 players x 3 packs, or two 8-player pods with 6 packs to spare), players building Standard or Commander decks from scratch, and anyone who wants the most cards per dollar.

Collector Booster box (Magic)

• 12 packs of 15 cards, every card foil or special-treatment, with the extended-art, borderless, showcase and serialized cards concentrated here.
• About four to six times the price of a Play Booster box for a third of the packs; the value is in the chase cards, not the card count.
• Best for: collectors, players who want premium versions of specific cards, and anyone who opens packs for the hits rather than the playables.

The Pokémon equivalent

Pokémon has one kind of booster box: 36 packs in a sealed display (the "booster box" on this site is that display). The premium tier is not a separate box but the Elite Trainer Box (packs plus accessories and a promo) and the special sets such as 151 or Prismatic Evolutions, sold only in ETBs, collection boxes and tins rather than booster boxes. When a Pokémon set has no booster box, that is why.

Lorcana, One Piece, Riftbound

Lorcana boxes hold 24 packs, One Piece boxes 24 packs, Riftbound boxes 24 packs; none of them has a collector tier yet, the premium products being gift sets, Illumineer's Troves and Premium Card Collections. The pack count for every box is on its product page.

What we recommend

If you are unsure, take the Play Booster box or the booster box: it is what the game was designed around and what holds its value most steadily. Add a Collector box when a set has a card you specifically want in a premium version. Both ship sealed in a padded carton, and Magic boxes released less than a year ago ship within Canada only.
